A high school fair is a private event for students, parents, and high school faculty to be introduced to colleges and universities. During these fairs, admissions representatives will have tables set up with flyers and brochures about their institution. However, students tend to grab one of these brochures and walk on towards the next table, but that is a big mistake. If you can engage and connect with an admissions representative without having to leave your school, you should take advantage of that opportunity. Make a good impression with the admissions representative by introducing yourself and starting a conversation with them about their institution and its programs. It will be slightly anxiety stricken at first, but once you realize they are a human too, the conversation will come freely. We have come up with a list of questions that are a great start for students to ask admissions representatives:
· I am interested in…is it offered at your institution?
· How are students supported on campus?
· Do you offer any scholarships?
· How can I make my application stand out amongst the others?
· What can I do now to prepare my application?
This is an opportunity to make yourself memorable to an admissions representative, so do it! If you have already been given the chance to experience a high school fair, you are off to a great start. If your high school has never had a high school fair, reach out to your school’s principle or guidance counselor to find out about hosting one.
Emailing is a great way to connect with an admission representative if you do not have the ability to meet them in person. When you are emailing an admission representative, you must make sure your email is professional. If your email is presented in a non-professional manner, with typos for example, you will leave a bad impression on yourself. By being professional with proper grammar, language, and punctuation; it shows that you are mature, well-spoken, and ready to join their institution. Some tips we suggest when writing an email to an admissions representative:
· Write your email in your real voice, you do not want to sound like a robot in your email. Try to keep it professional, mature, and you!
· Proofread you email before clicking send, nothing is worse than having an easy to fix mistake being sent to a professional
· You are not writing an essay, so try to keep your email short. Focus on the institution and what you want to know about it, rather than yourself
· You should always end your email with a “Thank you” followed by your first and last name and a way to contact you
We know that students love to be able to meet face-to-face because you can connect with admission representatives and give them a long-lasting impression, but we need to adapt due to the global pandemic. Virtual fairs are like high school fairs in almost every way except for the in-person interaction. Students are given the ability to connect with admissions representatives through text and video chat and can ask questions about their institutions and all that they have to offer students. The best part of a virtual college and university fair is that anyone can attend.
At Worldwide College Tours, we have added virtual fairs to adapt to today’s circumstances. We have admission representatives from Canada, the USA, and Europe that are in attendance to help students, parents, and education professionals learn more about their international education options.
